Woonona man slashed with machete

A Woonona man is in hospital after he was slashed with a machete in a street argument.

Just before 5 am Saturday, emergency services were called to Campbell Street following reports of two men arguing in the street, police say.

Officers found a 28-year-old man bleeding from a neck laceration.

The injured man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and taken to Wollongong hospital for treatment. His injury is not considered life-threatening, but will require surgery.

A crime scene was established and inquiries commenced into the incident. Police arrested a 34-year-old man at the scene and he has been charged with reckless wounding.

It will be alleged he had been earlier dancing and swinging a machete above his head when it came into contact with the other man’s neck.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on 16 June.
