Mayor Anne Baker has put the re-elected Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry and her Senate counterpart Matt Canavan on notice that she wants to see words of support matched with genuine action to back the communities of the 'resources capital' of Queensland.
"Their re-election platform was built of the shoulders of our hard-working miners and their families," Mayor Baker said.
"And whilst Council and the communities of the Isaac greatly appreciated their vocal support for the resources sector during the campaign, sadly, their powerful words were not matched with action by way of financial commitments.
"We remain at a loss as to why the Coalition, which aligned itself so strongly with the business and enterprise of mining, did not make or even match any election commitments in a region with 26 operating coal mines.
Mayor Baker said as part of Council's ongoing advocacy program, all candidates and parties contesting the recent Federal election were provided with a costed list of priority community projects and policy positions.
"These are projects which will help energise the communities which underpin our resources sector. An investment in our region is an investment in the vital industries which drive our nation's economy," she said.
"Around $75 million in announcements were made during the LNP's Capricornia campaign, but it was profoundly disappointing that there was not one commitment for the Isaac region.
"This is a region which generates billions in royalties and taxation for both levels of government which fund all those political promises."
Mayor Baker said she had extended an invitation to Michelle Landry and Matt Canavan to meet with Council to discuss the situation and how all levels of government could better work together in the interests of the region.
"Council is absolutely committed to advocating to higher levels of government to get the best deal for the residents of our region. This is about delivering a fair go for the Isaac," she said.
"We will also be calling on all residents who feel we are missing out to reach out to not just Federal, but also our State representatives, to make it clear we deserve a fair go."
