Work Begins On Third Stage Of Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary

Gunnedah Shire Council

Construction is now underway on the highly anticipated third stage of the Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary, which will bring eco-tourism accommodation options and opportunities to learn more about one of Australia's most beloved native species.

Gunnedah Shire Council received $8 million from the NSW Government to construct five safari-style tents, 14 powered sites, picnic areas, caretaker and volunteer accommodation, and bush tucker garden, which will aim to draw more tourists to the area and increase overnight stays.

Once completed, Gunnedah Shire Council expects the tourism attraction to bring 90,000 visitors a year to the region and create new jobs for the local community.

Stage three will complement the recently completed works, which includes a koala rehabilitation hospital, koala enclosures, a learning auditorium, and tree planting to provide food for the park's residents in future.

The NSW Government is committed to the development of tourism projects that are accessible and inclusive for everyone and ensure all visitors to regional NSW have unforgettable experiences that increase local and international appeal and boost regional visitor economies.

The $22.664 million project has been made possible thanks to $20,104,248 from the NSW Government, $2 million from Whitehaven, and $559,752 from Gunnedah Shire Council.

Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty said:

"It's fantastic to see stage three of the Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary underway.

"This project is a great example of NSW Government investment in projects that support koala conservation whilst increasing public awareness of koalas through engaging and immersive educational experiences.

"The upgrades will create a lasting legacy that will connect koala conservation with visitors to the north western NSW, whilst creating local jobs for people in Gunnedah."

Gunnedah Shire Council, Mayor, Colleen Fuller said:

"We are excited to see the completion of stage two of the much-anticipated Koala Sanctuary and look forward to breaking ground on the third stage of this important project.

"This is a significant milestone for not only our community, but also our koalas who are part of our identity here in the Gunnedah Shire.

"This world-class facility will help to ensure koalas remain part of our future."

Whitehaven Managing Director and CEO Paul Flynn said:

"The world-class Koala Sanctuary will not only support local conservation but attract visitors to the region and provide benefits for the local environment and community.

"We're proud to be partnering with the NSW Government and the Gunnedah Shire Council on this exciting development, which will create a long-term environmental and economic legacy for the region.

"Whitehaven's investment reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting regional growth and delivering tangible benefits to our local communities."
