Stage two works are now underway to complete the Barwon River loop in Winchelsea, with construction beginning on a new pedestrian bridge and two viewing platforms.

The project will complete the two-kilometre Barwon River loop, linking the new works with the section delivered in stage one to create a continuous path through Winchelsea and improve connections to the Barwon River.

Mayor Libby Stapleton said it's great to see this final stage getting underway.

"This project will complete the river loop and make it easier for people to walk and ride between different parts of Winchelsea while enjoying the river environment," she said.

"The new bridge and viewing platforms will create new places for people to stop, take in the surroundings and enjoy this important part of our town."

The new pedestrian bridge below Armytage Street will provide a safer and more accessible connection across the river.

Two viewing platforms will also be installed on either side of the Barwon River between the two bridges, giving the community new places to stop, enjoy the river and connect with the natural environment.

Stage two works include:

  • Excavating foundations for the bridge.
  • Some tree removal and vegetation trimming.
  • Assembling the steel bridge and viewing platforms.

Construction is expected to be completed by late November 2026.

Once complete, the river loop will provide a two-kilometre walking and cycling connection between Winchelsea's four quadrants and improve access to the Barwon River environment.

This project supports the walking and connected principle of the Winchelsea Place Plan for a more connected town by making it easier for people to move around Winchelsea and access the Barwon River.
