Mornington Peninsula Shire is working on the final stage of the Bentons Road upgrade in Moorooduc – one of the Peninsula's significant east-west road corridors.
As part of the Federal Government's Roads to Recovery funding program, the final stage is improving the section of Bentons Road between Moorooduc Highway and Derril Road.
Contractual and permit delays, tree removal, wet weather and COVID-19 have impacted project delivery timelines. Our contractor is fast tracking works, which once weather conditions improve, will see the project back on track.
Works were originally scheduled to finish up in July, however the road is now set to be completed and reopen towards the end of 2021.
This last stage of road works follows the already completed widening of Loders Road, as well as the construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Bentons Road and Derril Road.
Works include:
- widening of the existing road pavement
- installation of new and upgrade of existing drainage infrastructure
- installation of crash barriers
- an upgrade of the intersection of Gorman/Rickards/Bentons Road.
As part of the stage three works, a 1.6km stretch of Bentons will be constructed with Plastiphalt – an asphalt product using recycled waste plastic.
This is one of the larger road projects undertaken by the Shire and approximately 1,450 tonnes of Plastiphalt will be used, with around 5 tonnes of plastic (1.8 million plastic packages) diverted from landfill.
This project is part of our Towards Zero 2020–2025 Road Safety Strategy which aims to achieve zero deaths and serious injuries on roads within the Shire by 2050, and our Environmentally Sustainable Design Policy aiming to enhance the Peninsula's built environment without detriment to the natural environment.
