Cairns Regional Council will undertake works to remove three diseased branches from the westernmost fig tree (Ficus elastica) at the Cairns City Library site.
An arborist's inspection of the tree determined that the three limbs, which are leaning and overhanging the footpath and parking areas, are at high risk of failing as a result of disease and associated decay, and recommended their removal in the interest of public safety.
The works will be undertaken tomorrow (15 September) and will be performed by qualified professionals. Visual inspections to ensure there are no birds or flying foxes in the trees will be carried out before any pruning is undertaken.
Motorists are advised that a lane closure could be required in Aplin St, as well as impact on several parking spots, to allow the works to be undertaken.
Council acknowledges that the trees at the City Library site are highly valued by the community and has strict policies and procedures to ensure responsible tree management.
Regular assessments of the health of the trees at the site are undertaken by Council and steps are taken to extend the safe useful life of the tree.
