Workshops to nurture healthy thinking after tough years

Shrugging off the COVID19 pandemic will be easier for some than for others, so it's important to develop good behaviour habits and thinking habits.

Corangamite Shire residents will be able to sign up for two free workshops with Clinical and Forensic Psychologist David Cherry.

Mr Cherry has been practicing for more than 40 years and runs training all around Australia.

The sessions will cover:

  • developing new, desirable habits;
  • making very small changes for big long-term benefits;
  • how the influence of people we spend time with can help us;
  • the importance of persistence and how to develop it; and
  • simple techniques to help promote positive change.

"Over the past two years, our lives have changed significantly due to COVID-19 and it has never been more important to be conscious of both our own mental health and that of those around us," Mr Cherry said.

"Our behaviour habits and thinking habits affect our physical and mental health and are in turn affected by our physical and mental health.

"Understanding how good habits can be developed can help reduce stress in the short term as well as promoting our physical health and mental well-being in the long term."

Mayor Ruth Gstrein encouraged residents who feel ground down by the pandemic—or know someone who does—to attend a session and reclaim their positivity and optimism.

"If you feel like the pandemic has been a long and draining experience, you're not alone," Cr Gstrein said.

"After months of staying at home, and ongoing concerns, it can be a challenge to get back to our usual routines. Some people might have got into the habit of avoiding social interactions and group activities.

"These workshops aim to help those people change their mindset so they can take their lives back. If you're coping well, the sessions will still give you the skills to notice if someone isn't and to support them in getting back to full enjoyment of life.

"As well as their own well-being, it is good for the wider community as people re-engage with clubs, organisations and volunteer groups that contribute so much to the richness of community life."
