World Asthma Day is a timely reminder for Queenslanders to take proactive steps to manage their asthma, with community pharmacies playing an increasingly important role in supporting patients with long-term respiratory conditions.
Chris Owen, President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said that community pharmacies across the state have been offering more services to asthma patients in more locations.
"Asthma is a common long-term condition that affects the airways, causing symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. Different triggers bring on asthma symptoms in different people. Asthma cannot be cured, but with effective management, regular monitoring and early intervention people with asthma can live normal, active lives," said Mr Owen.
"Across the state, we're helping more Queenslanders access timely care close to home, including through the Community Pharmacy Chronic Conditions Management Pilot currently underway," Mr Owen said.
"Community pharmacists are playing an important role in supporting Queenslanders to better manage chronic conditions like asthma," said Mr Owen.
Community pharmacies participating in the pilot can assist eligible patients with asthma management, including:
- Supporting asthma action plans and ongoing management
- Reviewing medications to ensure they are being used effectively
- Providing education on symptom management and triggers
- Supporting correct inhaler technique
"These services are improving access to care, particularly for Queenslanders in regional and remote communities, where access to primary healthcare can be more limited," said Mr Owen.
"Community pharmacies are located in almost every town and suburb across Queensland, making it easier for people to access advice, support and treatment when they need it," Mr Owen said.
Queenslanders are encouraged to Think Pharmacy First and speak with their local community pharmacist this World Asthma Day to learn more about managing their asthma and the services available to support their health.
