World Bank Director Visits Bhutan, Pledges Support

New Country Partnership Framework Launched

THIMPHU, MAY 21, 2025-World Bank Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde today concluded her first visit to Bhutan, reaffirming the World Bank Group's strong and expanding support to help the country achieve its economic and development goals.

During her audience with H.M. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bjerde commended Bhutan's remarkable strides in accelerating economic growth and reducing poverty while demonstrating that modernity and heritage can coexist.

"Bhutan is renowned for its pristine beauty and unique development philosophy. It has also made impressive strides in human development and significantly reduced poverty through sustained economic growth," said Bjerde. "The Kingdom is setting a bold vision for the future and the World Bank Group is doubling down its support to Bhutan's ambitious goals to create jobs, drive growth, and protect Bhutan's heritage and ecosystems."

Bjerde launched the World Bank Group's new Country Partnership Framework for Bhutan for the next five years. The framework-aligned with Bhutan's 13th Five-Year Plan and informed by an extensive consultation with local stakeholders-aims to support the country to boost growth and create more and better jobs while safeguarding its nature and culture. The strategy focuses on creating private sector-led jobs, particularly for the youth, women, and disadvantaged people.

Bjerde also visited a high school and interacte with grade 12 students. The World Bank is helping Bhutan strengthen its education system so it can prepare graduates for gainful employment.

During the visit, she met with H.E. Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the Prime Minister, Finance Minister, senior government officials, private sector and civil society leaders and women entrepreneurs to discuss Bhutan's development priorities. She was accompanied by the World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region, Martin Raiser.
