The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has paused to honour staff who lost their lives while protecting the community, the environment and cultural heritage, with a moving service in the Blue Mountains.
The names of the 12 NPWS staff members on the Honour Roll were read to family, friends and colleagues at the NPWS memorial at George Phillips Lookout near Govett's Leap in Blue Mountains National Park.
The memorial also paid tribute to Field Officer Johnny Lohan, who died in December 2025 while firefighting near Bulahdelah. Mr Lohan served with NPWS for almost three decades and was widely respected as an experienced firefighter, Divisional Commander, mentor and colleague.
The annual service falls on World Ranger Day on 31 July, a day that recognises the dedication, courage and sacrifice of rangers and conservation workers around the world in protecting natural and cultural landscapes for future generations.
More than 2,000 NPWS staff work across some of the state's most remote and challenging environments, caring for national parks and reserves, protecting cultural heritage, responding to emergencies and supporting local communities.

"World Ranger Day is an opportunity to pause, reflect and remember those who lost their lives while protecting people, Country and the natural and cultural heritage of NSW.
"Today we honour the 12 staff who lost their lives in the course of their duties. We honour them with our gratitude and carry their memory forward.
"We also acknowledge the staff who have been injured while carrying out this important work, and the families, friends and colleagues who continue to feel the loss of those they loved and worked alongside.
"Across the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, more than 2,000 dedicated staff carry out complex and often challenging work in remote and unpredictable environments. Their professionalism, commitment and courage are deeply valued by the people of NSW."
