Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve Gateway Building

As part of realising the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve masterplan vision, we're creating a unique gateway entrance into the reserve, to help separate the busy highway environment and welcome visitors into the tranquil urban oasis.

Located near the Glen Huntly Road, Nepean Highway and New Street corner, the Gateway Building is designed to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating with sustainable features including solar energy generation, rainwater reuse, sustainable materials, climate resilient landscaping, and building efficiencies.

The innovative three-part pebble-like building design integrates the surrounding flora and fauna, and the sensitive 'Caring for Country' design responds to two key themes in the masterplan: ecology and connection.

The gateway will welcome visitors to the nature reserve, and focus on themes of learning, engagement, and repair to connect community to country. The design includes a multi-functional community space including office and community meeting area, event and exhibition space; hearing loop, AV equipment, public amenities, Changing Places facility, café with a commercial lease opportunity, a viewing platform, bespoke feature artwork created by First Nations artist Maree Clarke, native landscaping, water features, and pathways.

At the February 2026 meeting we awarded the construction contract for the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve Gateway Building to Devco Project & Construction Management Pty Ltd.

We received 4 formal tender submissions for the contract. Devco Project & Construction Management Pty Ltd's submission was evaluated as the most suitable construction partner due to their extensive experience in delivering complex projects, and with Local and State governments.

Devco Project & Construction Management Pty Ltd's previous projects include Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Community Centre (Wyndham City Council), Fern Street Children's Centre (Bayside City Council), Altona Sports Centre (Hobsons Bay City Council), and Glen Eira College (VSBA).

Works are commencing March 2026 and are anticipated to take approximately 12 months. During construction, onsite temporary fencing will ensure the area is kept safe for reserve users. Access to the reserve from Glen Huntly Road and Nepean Highway will be closed during construction. A new access point on New Street, located at the northern end of the Chain of Ponds, is available for reserve users during works.

To prepare for the Gateway Building construction we're pruning and removing a small section of shrubs. We're replanting the area with indigenous vegetation to complement the established Chain of Ponds vegetation.

We look forward to sharing this unique gateway entrance into the tranquil urban oasis from mid-2027.

Bayside City Council is proud to deliver the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve Gateway Building in collaboration with the community, and thanks the Australian Government for its funding support.
