Yarra Adopts New Art And Heritage Collection Policy

Yarra City Council

Council unanimously adopted the City of Yarra Collection Policy 2025–2029 at its October meeting. The policy is the guiding document that outlines the principles and practices for the acquisition, documentation, conservation, interpretation, and accessibility of Council's art and heritage collection.

Council's art and heritage collection comprises over 1,030 items and consists of indoor and outdoor items divided into three main categories: Civic, Art, and Public Art. The collection aims to reflect artistic, cultural, social, environmental and historical context of the City of Yarra for the benefit of current and future generations.

The previous Collection Policy was produced in 2020 and required a refresh.

Throughout the past year, Council developed a draft Collection Policy 2025-2029 and, in July and August 2025, consulted the community and asked them to share their thoughts on the draft policy before it was presented to be considered for adoption.

We received many valuable contributions from the Yarra community and, where possible, suggestions from community members have been incorporated into the final version of the Collection Policy.
