Yarra Council remains opposed to East West Link

Yarra City Council has backed Premier Daniel Andrew's refusal to resurrect the East West Link.

Yarra Mayor, Cr Danae Bosler said the council remains opposed to the toll road, four years on from the project being cancelled.

"Our community campaigned long and hard against this disastrous project four years ago, and we continue to stand by them.

"The East West Link was a bad project from day one, and will cost significantly more than the $4 billion on offer from the Prime Minister – the real cost is likely to be over $10 billion.

"Despite the huge cost, the Eddington report found only 20% of vehicles will travel through from east to west. At least 80% of vehicles will still exit at Hoddle Street to access the city.

"This toll road will only worsen traffic in Yarra. The solution to alleviating traffic is to offer people efficient and convenient alternatives to driving.

"As we continue to face the climate crisis, we call on the Federal Government to invest more in public and sustainable transport options.

"There are so many projects that would benefit from Federal funding, from upgrading tram stops so they are wheelchair accessible, to city-wide investment in sustainable transport," said Cr Bosler.
