As Moira Shire Youth Council celebrates its successful first year, applications are now open for more aspiring young leaders to join the program.
If you're aged between 16 and 24 and passionate about making a meaningful difference for young people in Moira Shire, as well as learning valuable leadership and personal skills, now is the time to put your hand up.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM praised the Youth Council members at their recent end-of-year celebration, and encouraged them to keep up the good work in 2026.
"Being part of the Youth Council is more than attending meetings or representing your peers. It's about stepping up, being brave enough to speak out, and taking the initiative to help shape the kind of community you want to live in," Dr Emonson said.
"This year, the Youth Council members have shown incredible leadership through community projects, advocacy on youth issues and representing young people's voices at Council and community events.
"They have demonstrated maturity, creativity and teamwork - all while balancing school, work and personal commitments."
Some of this year's achievements include helping shape social media engagement with Moira's young people, as well as planning and hosting the very successful Youth Fest in September.
"You helped create spaces for young people to connect, celebrate and be seen," Dr Emonson said.
The Youth Council also provided important insights into how the closure of the Strathmerton Bega factory will impact young people in the Shire. A survey and engagement designed by youth councillors specifically targeted the voice of affected young community members.
"We also received practical and invaluable input on the design of the new Yarrawonga Multisport Stadium," Dr Emonson said.
"It is important we hear the voice of young people on a wide range of community matters. The input of the Youth Council is vitally important to the overall work of Council."
Dr Emonson thanked the parents and guardians of the youth councillors, "whose support makes it possible for these young leaders to give so much of themselves to their community".
He also thanked Moira Shire's Community Wellbeing team and staff who
support the Youth Council. "Your guidance, mentorship and commitment ensure these young voices are heard and empowered."
Dr Emonson urged other young people from throughout Moira Shire to apply for the limited vacancies available on the Youth Council.
"You are the future leaders of this region, and your contribution matters deeply."
Youth Council membership requires a commitment to bi-monthly meetings, and other activities in the alternating months. This begins in February and ends in late November, with a highlight of the year being a community event hosted by the youth councillors.
Applications close on Sunday, January 11.
