Bayside's inaugural Youth Summit has empowered young people to share ideas, build leadership skills and help shape their community.
More than 120 students in years 7 to 12 representing 6 secondary schools across Bayside and neighbouring communities gathered at Beaumaris Secondary College for a day of leadership, collaboration and connection.
In workshops led by Youth Leadership Academy Australia, students developed leadership skills and explored ways to support their peers and drive positive change in their schools and communities.
Bayside Mayor Cr Debbie Taylor-Haynes and CEO Matthew Cripps opened the summit before students from Beaumaris Secondary College took centre stage as performers, MCs and co-facilitators.
"The day's biggest success was seeing young people step confidently into leadership roles," Cr Taylor-Haynes said.
"Students were encouraged to speak up, challenge ideas and learn from one another."
"We commend the students for sharing their ideas, pitching initiatives and tackling issues that matter most to them."
They explored issues including mental health, cost of living, substance use, social connection and future pathways, developing practical solutions to address them.
More than a one-day event, the summit has laid the foundation for ongoing youth leadership, with young people's ideas helping shape future programs and initiatives across Bayside.
"I definitely feel more confident to speak up and create positive change," one student said.
Another student said meeting new people and hearing different perspectives inspired them to step outside their comfort zone and better support others.
Supported by the Victorian Government's Engage! program, the Bayside Youth Summit will continue providing opportunities for young people to connect, lead and help shape Bayside's future.
