Youth Action Plan Boosts Central Australian Development

NT Government

The wellbeing and development of young people in Mparntwe/Alice Springs will be strengthened with actions outlined in a new Youth Action Plan.

The new plan, developed in conjunction with young people, is designed to comprehensively address the immediate and long-term wellbeing needs of young people.

It was also built in partnership with local businesses and service providers to develop and deliver a range of programs for young people that will guide future investment and program delivery.

The plan has already seen the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities regional youth program coordinators working with local business to develop training and employment pathways and opportunities for young people.

Local business, Get Physical received funding to deliver its Better Bodies Program where they train and employ young Aboriginal people.

Through their support and commitment, participant Gabe Richards received training and work experience as well as personal support and mentoring.

Gabe had been struggling at home and school, so participation in this program gave him the confidence and skills he needed to move into employment.

He is now undertaking a carpentry apprenticeship and is excited about his new career.

Addressing the fundamental needs of young people, fostering a sense of community and embracing sustainability, the plan's initiatives contribute to creating a thriving and inclusive environment for young people and families.

The action plan prioritises wellbeing, ensuring basic needs, promoting health, facilitating meaningful learning, fostering participation in community life, celebrating culture, and encouraging environmental sustainability for the overall development of youth and families.
