Leeton Shire Council awarded a Youth Development Grant of $250 each to Zayn Bourke, Ava Dowton and Jameson Greatz to assist with the costs of attending the NSW State Little Athletics Championships, held at Sydney Olympic Park, on 21 & 22 March 2026.
Zayn competed as a T/F44 para athlete in the 9-10 boys long jump, shot put and discus. He delivered an outstanding performance, placing 3rd in both long jump and discus with new personal bests, and finishing 4th in shot put. His results reflect significant training and dedication in the lead-up to the championships, and Zayn is eager to continue to push himself.
Ava competed in the U9 girls 100m and high jump, progressing through earlier competitions in Finley and the Regional Championships in Wollongong. She equalled her personal best in the high jump to secure a bronze medal, placing 3rd in the state, and also achieved a new personal best in the 100m sprint, finishing 19th overall.
Jameson competed in the 60m hurdles, finishing 14th out of 24 competitors and achieving a personal best time. His performance reflects strong effort and continued development at a state level.
Councillor and Portfolio Lead for Youth, Sandra Nardi, said Council was proud to support young Leetonians striving for sporting excellence.
"Getting to a state championship is no small feat, especially coming from a regional area, and it's fantastic to see Zayn, Ava and Jameson's hard work paying off," she said.
Council congratulates all three athletes on their achievements and looks forward to supporting their continued participation in future competitions.
