10,000 cyclists to ride from Sydney to the Gong, NSW

NSW Police will be out in force tomorrow as 10,000 cyclists ride from Sydney to Wollongong in support of people living with multiple sclerosis, NSW Police say.

Operation Lakeside will be launched to ensure the safety and security of those participating in the charity bicycle ride, road users and the wider community.

Riders can choose to participate in either the 82km ‘MS Sydney to Gong’ ride starting in Sydney city, or a 58km ride from Engadine.

Both routes will travel through the Royal National Park, Stanwell Tops, Sea Cliff Bridge and along the NSW coast to end in Wollongong.

Runners will also hit the pavement in support of the charity event, with a 5km and 10km ‘MS Wellness Run’, being held along the Wollongong coastline.

General duties officers from across the Central Metropolitan, South-West Metropolitan and Southern Regions, will be assisted by specialist police from the Bicycle Unit, Police Transport Command, and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command throughout the operation.

Operation Lakeside Commander, Superintendent Gavin Wood, said both riders and runners are in for an exciting day as they travel along some of Sydney’s most scenic coastline.

"The MS Sydney to Gong ride is yet another example of the community coming together to support those in need," Supt Wood said.

"Our priority this weekend is to deliver a safe and family-friendly event for everyone to enjoy, while minimising the impact on road users and the local community.

"If you are planning to drive between Sydney and Wollongong, drive carefully, make sure you stay under the speed limit and always wear a seat belt," said Supt Wood.
