2022 Young Archies Awards

Elise Archer, Minister for Arts

It was my pleasure to present today the winners and highly commended awards for this year's Young Archies Awards at an event held at the UTAS School of Creative Arts and Media in Hobart.

Based on the famous Archibald Prize, the Young Archies Awards are an annual Tasmanian portrait competition open to all students of Department of Education schools and colleges, ranging from Kindergarten to Year 12.

As Minister for the Arts, I would like to congratulate all the winners and participants for the exceptionally high quality of submissions received this year.

In particular, my congratulations to Mack Brown of Taroona High School, who won the inaugural Tony Woodward Award for overall secondary school students winner for his inspirational portrait of 102 year old Brian Winspear.

Held annually since 2006, the Young Archies motivate and inspire young Tasmanian learners, and provide an opportunity for artistic expression and showcase the wealth of young talent across our State. Submissions must portray an inspiring or distinguished person known to the young artist, providing a meaningful tribute to the important people and role models in our local communities, as identified by Tasmanian children and young people.

This year, a total of 596 entries were received from across 51 Tasmanian schools, with submissions coming from all corners of the State, including King Island, St Helens, Port Sorell and Bruny Island.

All entries are currently on display as part of the Young Archies' exhibition at the UTAS School of Creative Arts and Media in Hobart until Saturday, 10 September, 2022. The exhibition will also be touring to Launceston and Burnie over the coming months.

Entries can also be seen as part of a virtual exhibition on the Department of Education website.
