2023 Shoal Bay Waste Facility Tyre Rates Rise

Darwin City Council

From Monday 23 January 2023, City of Darwin will increase the gate fee for all commercial operators bringing used tyres to Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility (SBWMF) and cease accepting shredded tyres.

The current gate fee for commercial tyre disposal falls well short of achieving the full cost recovery for providing this service and is currently lower than the rate charged by other Northern Territory tyre receivers.

To ensure cost recovery when recycling tyres, disposal fees for commercial operators will increase from $750 per tonne to $1,180 per tonne (including GST).

City of Darwin also has made a commitment to reducing waste to landfill and supporting a circular economy at SBWMF where materials are reused and recycled.

Tyres received at SBWMF will be recycled into other products and shredded tyres will no longer be received as they are not processed to a grade suitable for recycling.
