Hawkesbury City Council's 2026 School Leadership Program welcomed 186 students from five Hawkesbury primary schools over two massive days.
Hawkesbury students from years five and six at Kurrajong East Public School, Hawkesbury Home School Group, Glossodia Public School, Windsor South Public School and Comleroy Road Public School visited Hawkesbury City Council to learn more about all levels of Government, democracy, and the work that Council undertakes to provide residents and visitors of the Hawkesbury with the facilities and infrastructure we use and enjoy each day.
Students took part in a range of engaging and educational workshops delivered by Council staff from the Asset Systems and Planning, Corporate Communications and Events, Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants, and Community Planning and Partnerships teams. Activities included learning about the National Child Safe Standards and knowing how to seek support from safe adults in community facilities; designing a dream playground while balancing budget limitations and community needs; and exploring how local, state and federal governments work, how elections are run, and how the community can have their say on Council matters.
Mayor of Hawkesbury, Les Sheather, attended both days and with the help of Hawkesbury City Councillors, led students in a mock Council meeting in the Council Chambers. Selected students were asked to discuss building a park in Pitt Town and were invited to present their case, showcasing their impressive debating skills.
The School Leadership Program is offered annually to local schools and provides informative and interactive sessions to support classroom learning. The goal of the School Leadership Program is to foster lifelong interest in local government, providing the future of the Hawkesbury with the confidence to participate productively in their local community.
