Aboriginal employee housing in the East Kimberley region is set to receive a boost with the appointment of a builder for six new homes being delivered by Wunan Foundation (Wunan) with the help of a $3.15 million State Government grant.
The development by Western Australian company Thermal Comfort Homes, will comprise a mixed two-storey block of six dwellings with two fully accessible units on the ground floor.
The Wunan project is one of seven funded for a total of $10.44 million through six Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations (ACCOs) in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions.
The grant program is funded as part of the State Government's $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund and will support the valuable work of eligible ACCOs across the State's North West, by providing secure and stable housing for employees and their families.
Wunan is a not-for-profit Aboriginal development organisation operating in the East Kimberley since 1997 that works to empower Aboriginal people in the region to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"Our government continues to get on with delivering a record $5.1 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.
"This project is the first of seven that have been funded with $10.44 million in grants to six Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations to boost and refurbish housing across the Kimberley and Pilbara regions."
As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch:
"This program supports the incredible work of ACCOs across the North West by providing secure and affordable housing for Aboriginal employees and their families.
"Our $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund and this government's continued reforms are supporting housing options and funding for Aboriginal people in the Kimberley and the Pilbara."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"These new homes will boost the capability of Wunan to attract and retain quality employees in Kununurra by offering employer-provided housing to workers to increase stability and connection to community.
"I am excited to see these six new homes being delivered as one of the seven Aboriginal Employee Housing projects planned for the Kimberley and Pilbara is testament to our government's ongoing commitment to addressing housing supply concerns."
