A police operation in Surry Hills tonight (Tuesday 10 February 2026) has concluded without major incident.
Local police were assisted by officers from across the metropolitan region as well as various specialist units at a planned public assembly in Harmony Park.
An 18-year-old man was arrested after allegedly continuously shining a torch in the face of police officers. He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he is expected to be charged.
Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna, Central Metropolitan Region Commander, said police showed enormous restraint in a high-pressured situation.
"The antagonistic behaviour and provocation displayed by several protesters was significant; however, the professionalism of the police was borne out and I commend the composure shown by our officers on the front line," Ass Comm McKenna said.
"Police continued to perform their duties responsibly and respectfully, even when confronted with challenging behaviour and, in some instances, deeply disturbing conduct from individuals within the assembly."
