Applications have now been submitted to the NSW Reconstruction Authority for $35 million of repairs, after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused extensive damage in the Byron Shire in 2025.

If applications are approved work will include repairs to roads, landslips, and bridges.

"Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused extensive damage in the Northern Rivers, which is on top of existing damage from other weather events, such as the 2022 floods," James Flockton, Byron Shire Acting Manager of Infrastructure Recovery, said.

"We know that there are several locations in the Shire that require urgent repair work, but until funding applications have been approved, we cannot begin these works.

"It is likely that this repair work will take a number of years to complete once approved, but first on our list will be essential repairs to Whian Road, which we hope to begin by the end of this year," said Mr Flockton.

Work pending approval includes:

  • Bridge repairs at Repentance Creek Road, Englishes Road, Binna Burra Road, Booyong Road and Main Arm Road.
  • Significant repairs to Goonengerry Mill Road, The Tunnel Road and Whian Road.
  • Minor repairs to almost 30 sealed roads and 10 gravel roads.
  • Landslip repairs on Bangalow Road, Tweed Valley Way, Wanganui Road, Main Arm Road, Coolamon Scenic Drive (Montecollum and Ocean Shores), Upper Coopers Creek Road and Goonengerry Road.
