39th Universal Periodic Review of human rights UK statement on Hungary

Thank you, Madam President.

The United Kingdom welcomes Hungary's commitment to eliminate human trafficking. We welcome Hungary's support for the Call to Action to End Human Trafficking, Modern Slavery and Forced Labour.

We recognise Budapest holds the longest running PRIDE march in the region, but we are concerned by a series of measures introduced in Hungary in the past two years that discriminate against the LGBT+ community.

We welcome Hungary's National Roma Integration Strategy from 2011 to 2020, but we encourage further work to address Roma discrimination, societal exclusion, and poverty.

We recommend that Hungary:

  • Create a specialised framework for identifying and assisting child victims of human trafficking.

  • Repeal discriminatory legislation, including 2020 amendments restricting adoptions for same-sex couples.

  • Introduce legal safeguards to make the Media Council more pluralistic and free from political interference.

Thank you.
