The Hon Trevor Evans, Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management

The Morrison Government today released the final report of, and its formal response to, the fourth independent review of the Product Stewardship (Oil) Act 2000.

Minister for the Environment, Sussan Ley said that the fourth review of the Product Stewardship for Oil Scheme (PSO) found it is continuing to meet its objectives, including achieving positive outcomes for Australia's unique environment and supporting jobs.

"Each year this vital scheme results in approximately a quarter of a billion litres of waste oil being recycled. In addition, it has ensured Australia has an effective and mature oil recycling industry employing more than 600 Australians and supporting thousands of contractors.

"Key among the review's findings are 3 recommendations to ensure the scheme remains cost effective and financially sustainable, as well as ensuring that Australians can access information on its outcomes.

"The government has noted the recommendations and will continue to work with industry to ensure the scheme continues to protect the environment and create employment."

The Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, Trevor Evans said that waste oil is a powerful contaminant with a single litre able to contaminate up to a million litres of water.

"Since the scheme began over 4,300 megalitres of oils and greases have been recycled. That's more than five times the oil released into the Gulf of Mexico by the Deepwater Horizon spill.

The government thanks the many stakeholders who provided input to the review, sharing their insights into the industry. We look forward to continuing to consult with industry."
