Young people at risk of homelessness in the South West will soon be able to access accommodation in a newly completed complex of eight units in South Bunbury.
The units will be managed by Accordwest, with the project made possible through a $5.84 million grant from the Cook Labor Government.
The purpose-built facility will offer a safe and supportive environment for young people aged 17-21 years who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, through the Youth Accommodation Support Service (YASS) program.
The eight apartments comprising the Bunyap Expansion Project have been built by WA-based Perkins Builders and will allow Accordwest to expand their youth services in the South West.
The complex consists of six studio apartments and two one-bedroom apartments, each with their own ensuite bathroom, kitchen and living area. Additional shared facilities include a laundry, storage areas and office facilities.
Accordwest has been operating for more than 40 years and provides transitional housing in the South-West for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The expansion is part of the Cook Government's record $5.8 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021, ensuring Western Australians have access to secure homes.
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"The Bunyap Expansion Project demonstrates our government's commitment to delivering targeted housing solutions for young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
"The South Bunbury facility will provide fit-for-purpose accommodation designed to meet the needs of young people while building pathways to independence."
As stated by Homelessness Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"Our government has worked with Accordwest and Perkins to deliver this important project for the South West community.
"It's great to see these units completed, which will soon provide a home for young people in the community experiencing or at risk of homelessness."
As stated by Acting South West Minister Jackie Jarvis:
"The Cook Government is committed to ensuring that people in Bunbury and across the South West have access to safe and secure housing.
"This new facility will provide young people in need with not only a place to call home, but the support and stability to build a brighter future.
"I am delighted to see this project reach completion, following a significant investment by our government to deliver real outcomes for the community."
