$638,000 infrastructure boost for race clubs in North West Queensland

Eight race clubs in North West Queensland will share in $638,000 worth of funding to deliver new and improved racing infrastructure.

Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the funding was part of a $3.9 million country racing infrastructure package to be shared between 55 Queensland race clubs.

The funding for the North West Queensland clubs includes:

  • Camooweal Jockey Club - $80,000 to refurbish racing surface
  • Cloncurry and District Race Club - $50,000 for repairs to rail, shade sails, track due to washouts and soil separation
  • Corfield Race Club Inc. - $10,000 to for air conditioning to Stewards' room, Jockeys' rooms, office and Officials' room
  • Gregory Downs Jockey Club Inc - $5,000 for barrier refurbishment
  • Hughenden Jockey Club - $151,000 for track works and grading and new barriers
  • Mt Isa Race Club - $150,000 for top dress of racing surface and installation costs of new running rails
  • North Gregory Turf Club - $97,000 towards co-contribution to Council to enable track remediation works, refurbishment to tie up stalls and barrier refurbishment
  • Richmond Turf Club - $50,000 for repairs to track

"Country racing is integral to communities and residents living in North West Queensland," he said.

"Small non-TAB clubs are at the heart of these communities, bringing people together and supporting local economies.

"They're not rich clubs by any means, but they have to meet ongoing infrastructure needs and this doesn't always come cheap.

"These funds will help improve the financial bottom line of these clubs while delivering the infrastructure they need going forward.

"It's all part of the Palaszczuk Government's four-year $70.4 million Country Racing Support Package which is delivering great results at the grassroots level."
