What is a community?

That is a question I have been reflecting on a lot, even more so since becoming an elected councillor. Getting to know people, families and groups living and working within the Shire from a different perspective.

We live in a community consisting of people from all walks of life, with many different skills and knowledge as well as different expectations.

Every person living in this community has a very solid reason for living in the Central Goldfields Shire.

We are all involved on some level contributing to the community and also benefiting from all the community has to offer, schools, hospitals, medical care, sports and social clubs, to mention but a few. The Council offers more than 42 services within the Shire. Not to mention the services offered by the Health Care Providers and other medical facilities. A wide range of services are also offered by the volunteers in the community. There are many people involved in all these organisations, taking great pride in the work they do.

A lot has recently been said about respect. Respecting each other. Be nice to each other. It is easy to sit back and criticise. Maybe we should, as a community take a little bit of time, more often thanking people, greeting a stranger walking past you in the street. There are a lot of lonely people out in the community, and there is nothing like a nice smile and a friendly greeting from a stranger to make you feel better and fill you with renewed energy for the day.

This is such a wonderfully welcoming community, and I would like to invite each and every one of you reading this, to make an effort to be more appreciative of all the privileges we have and above all, say g'day to strangers you pass in the street.
