74-year-old man assaulted and robbed in Redfern

Police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted and robbed at Redfern overnight.

About 9.30pm yesterday (Thursday 17 January 2019) a 74-year-old man was walking from Chalmers Street in an easterly direction into Redfern Oval.

About halfway across the oval he felt two blows to the back of his head and body.

When he turned around he saw three males who assaulted him. The man covered his head but was aware two further offenders also assaulted him.

During the incident the man's shoulder bag containing cash and personal papers were taken from him.

The man cried out for help and two men and two women came to his assistance.

The five offenders fled from the area and emergency services were contacted.

Ambulance paramedics treated the man who had lacerations to both hands, abrasions to his legs and soreness to his head and body.

Police from Redfern Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

Officers are searching for four teenage males, and one 20-year-old male who are described as being of Caucasian appearance.

The five males were about 160-165cm tall and wearing singlets and shorts.
