Queensland continues to face a significant surge in influenza infections this year, with nearly 44,000 laboratory-confirmed cases recorded so far in 2025. With just over a month left in the flu season, health authorities and community pharmacies are urging Queenslanders to get vaccinated to protect themselves. The surge in infections, nearly 20% higher than last year, has placed significant pressure on the state's health care system.
Chris Owen, President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said the latest data from Queensland Health reveals that 86% of those hospitalised with flu this year were not vaccinated, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing severe illness and hospitalisation.
"You can't argue with the numbers," Mr Owen said. "86% of people hospitalised with flu weren't vaccinated and 90% of reported cases hadn't had the vaccine. The message is clear: get to your community pharmacy and get vaccinated."
"Flu-related hospital admissions have increased steadily in recent months, contributing to sustained pressure on hospitals and emergency departments across the state," said Mr Owen.
"Influenza activity typically peaks during the winter months, with August historically one of the highest-risk periods. However, with flu cases continuing to climb, experts warn that the season is not yet over and that getting vaccinated remains critical for all Queenslanders."
Mr Owen also said that increasing vaccine uptake is crucial to reduce hospitalisations and protect those most at risk, including young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.
"With flu season expected to continue for at least another month, Queenslanders are strongly encouraged to book their free flu vaccination as soon as possible. Getting vaccinated not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of influenza within the community," said Mr Owen.
"Flu continues to impact thousands of Queenslanders and vaccination remains the best defence against severe illness and hospitalisation.
