A Bec backflip needed on mandatory sentences for child sex offenders

Leonie Hiscutt,Liberal Member for Montgomery

It is now 639 days since Labor first voted against mandatory sentencing for child sex offenders.

Yesterday, Sarah Lovell announced that Labor had finally ditched their disastrous policy platform, a week earlier Rebecca White backflipped on her signature pokies policy.

Yet, despite Labor MPs abandoning their policy platform, Rebecca White has yet to admit to Tasmanians that they are seriously out of touch on child safety.

Labor must immediately outline whether they continue to oppose mandatory minimum sentences for serious child sex offenders.

This issue is important to Tasmanians. Voters deserve to know whether Labor's candidates will use their block with the Greens in the Parliament to stop these critical reforms.

We know that Labor Party members in the Legislative Council have blocked mandatory sentences for child sex offenders once, and their Members and candidates will do it again.

It's time Labor put children first and commit to dumping their policy to obstruct tougher sentences for child sex offenders.
