A new way for young people in Mitchell to add their voice

People aged 12 to 24 across Mitchell Shire can now access a new platform to provide feedback to help shape the future actions for Youth Council.

The new online comment card program is an initiative of Mitchell Youth Council and will launch this Wednesday (3 June). The program was initially going to see ballot boxes installed across the shire, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will now be online.

Mitchell Youth Council is about to enter its 10th year and is made up of nine young people who were selected through an expression of interest to represent the young people of the shire.

Each fortnight they meet with the Council Youth Services team to discuss issues from the perspective of young people and work together on plans to address them. Their advice and perspective are also provided to staff and Councillors on various projects and initiatives.

Mitchell Youth Council have driven several key projects across our shire including the installation of outdoor exercise equipment in Wallan and securing funding for the new Wallan Youth Services Hub. The Hub will be opening soon and addresses a critical gap in accessible mental health services highlighted by Youth Council.

The Youth Council is actively involved in many advocacy campaigns and ongoing projects including public transport, environment planning, strategic planning and community hubs.

The comment card program was developed as a way for Youth Council to broaden their views and better represent the voice of young people across the municipality. The Youth Council will review suggestions and concerns raised through the comment cards quarterly and use them to guide their key focus areas and to identify new and emerging issues.
