Reporting a vacant property helps avoid unnecessary follow-up by Census field staff and ensures Census data accurately reflects housing occupancy and the population in Australia on Census night.
Importantly, information about vacant dwellings is only collected to ensure accurate Census statistics and is not shared with anyone, including other government agencies.
A property recorded as unoccupied on Census night does not necessarily mean it is permanently vacant or available for housing.
Homes may be unoccupied for many reasons, including holidays, travel, temporary absences or being between occupants.
Property owners can report that no one was staying at their property on Census night by visiting www.census.abs.gov.au/away or by calling 1800 181 227.
