Accomplished Benalla Photographers launch Spring workshops

Laying out a photobook

Benalla Art Gallery commences its Term 4 program of Art on Saturdays workshops with a program designed and delivered by accomplished Benalla photographers, Drs Victoria Cooper and Doug Spowart.

The workshop will guide participants through the process of making their own photobook, including how to best use available 'print-on-demand' services, as well as the 'do-it-yourself' option.

Cooper and Spowart will cover a range of exercises, including book construction, design, typography and layout. Participants will use these various skills to create a 'prototype' that will serve as the first draft of their photobook idea. The workshop is suited to anyone with an interest in curating their personal photo collection for print.

Benalla Art Gallery Director, Eric Nash, said "it's wonderful to present a workshop by some of the very talented artists based right here in Benalla. This particular workshop is exciting as it's suitable not only for artists, but also for those who want to make a wonderful keepsake, or even gift, from their personal photos."

The Curate your own Photobook with Victoria Cooper and Doug Spowart will take place in the Patricia [Pat] Gardner Studio at Benalla Art Gallery, from 12 midday to 4.30pm on Saturday 22 October.

About the artists

Victoria Cooper and Doug Spowart founded the Antipodean Photobook Blog as a way to connect Australian and New Zealand photobook makers, designers and publishers with the international scene. Cooper and Spowart have lectured nationally and internationally on the topic of photobooks.

Both have completed individual PhD studies in photography, photobooks, and artists' books. Their book works have been acquired for the photobook, artists' books and rare book collections in many private, national, and state libraries and international collections including the British Library. Both Cooper and Spowart have judged photobook awards and have contributed to photobook review panels in Australia. Doug's research on Australian and New Zealand photobooks was featured at the Vienna Photobook Festival and they were commissioned by Tate Britain to select a collection of these to compliment the Martin Parr Collection of Photobooks.
