The strategy commits to 100 per cent renewable electricity, continuing the transition away from fossil fuel gas, supporting electrification and delivering climate action in a fair and equitable way.
Property Council ACT & Capital Region Executive Director Ashlee Berry said it broadly reflected industry feedback and provided greater confidence about the Territory's climate direction.
"The Property Council supports the ACT's commitment to achieving net zero emissions while making sure Canberra remains an affordable, liveable and investment-ready city.
"This strategy takes a practical approach to climate action – reducing emissions and adapting to a changing climate must happen alongside delivering more homes, supporting economic growth and maintaining affordability for households and businesses.
"It delivers on the Property Council's calls for continued support for electrification, recognition of the unique challenges facing complex buildings, and a commitment to align climate policy with planning, infrastructure and housing outcomes.
"The Government has also clearly heard the message from industry that climate action must be ambitious, but at the same time practical and deliverable. This strategy provides a solid foundation for that next phase of work," she said.
"We are particularly pleased to see continued support for electrification and recognition that complex buildings face unique challenges in transitioning away from fossil fuel gas.
"For many commercial buildings, apartments, hotels and mixed-use developments, electrification is not simply a matter of changing appliances - it requires significant planning, investment and infrastructure coordination.
"The next step will be to work closely with industry to develop practical pathways that help existing buildings electrify, improve energy performance and contribute to the Territory's emissions reduction efforts without creating unintended barriers to investment or housing supply."
Ms Berry said the Property Council was encouraged to see the strategy place a strong emphasis on equity, resilience and the role of the built environment in responding to climate change.
"Canberra has been a national leader on climate action for many years. As we move into the next phase of the transition, collaboration between government and industry will be critical to delivering outcomes that are both ambitious and achievable.
"The built environment will play a central role in that task, and we look forward to continuing to work constructively with the ACT Government as detailed action plans are developed."
