ACT Government Thanks Outgoing Victims Of Crime Commissioner

The ACT Government has today acknowledged the outstanding service and contribution of Ms Heidi Yates as she concludes her term as the ACT Victims of Crime Commissioner.

Minister for Human Rights Tara Cheyne thanked Ms Yates for her unwavering commitment to victims' rights and for her leadership in improving the ACT's response to people impacted by crime.

"On behalf of the ACT Government, I extend my sincere and immense gratitude to Ms Heidi Yates for her dedicated service as the Victims of Crime Commissioner for the ACT," Minister Cheyne said.

"Since her appointment in 2018, Ms Yates has been a passionate and tireless advocate for victims of crime, working to ensure they are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness across the justice system."

Ms Yates has led significant reforms during her tenure, including the development of the ACT Charter of Rights for Victims of Crime and the introduction of the ACT Witness Intermediary Scheme, initiatives that have improved access to advocacy, information and justice for victims.

She has also played a key role in strengthening the ACT's systemic response to sexual violence, contributing to the work of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Steering Committee and championing a more trauma-informed, inclusive justice system.

"Ms Yates has served the ACT community with distinction, drive and kindness," Minister Cheyne said. "Her collaborative work with community organisations, government and service providers has shaped a more compassionate and supportive system for those affected by crime, delivering major advancements for victims' rights. I wish her all the very best in her next chapter."

The ACT Government has appointed Ms Margie Rowe as interim Victims of Crime Commissioner for a period of up to six months while a formal recruitment process is undertaken.

Ms Rowe has served as acting Commissioner since July 2024 and was previously the Senior Director of Victim Support ACT. She brings a wealth of experience to the role, including her earlier leadership as Family Violence Team Leader at Legal Aid ACT.

"I'd like to thank Ms Rowe for continuing in the interim role and for her strong leadership in delivering victim support services during this important period of transition," Minister Cheyne said.

"Ms Rowe has a proven track record and deep understanding of the issues facing victims of crime in the ACT. Her expertise and commitment will ensure that this vital work continues without disruption while recruitment for a permanent Commissioner is undertaken."
