The ACTU is pushing for a five per cent increase in the minimum and award wages on the back of rising prices of petrol and other basic household items.
This has led one employer association, the Australian Business Industrial and the NSW Business Chamber, to recommend that the Fair Work Commission increase award minimum pay by 2.5 percent to three percent from 1 July this year.
NatRoad's view is that an increase in real wages for workers without higher productivity (stalled by the snail's pace of the HVNL review) and a change to unfair contracts will put pressure on small to medium operators already struggling to meet their wages bill.
Some members are battling to retain employees in the wake of national disasters and rising fuel costs.
