ADA congratulates Australia Day 2021 Honours List recipients from dental profession

The ADA would like to warmly congratulate the following dentists in recognition of their considerable services to Australian dentistry and to the health and wellbeing of the wider Australian and global community, these dentists were recognised as part of the 2021 Australia Day Honours.

Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Dr Susan Joan GAFFNEY, Norwood SA 5006

For significant service to dental professional organisations, and to education.

A private general dental practitioner and ADA member throughout her career (1970-2014), Dr Susan Gaffney was a Foundation Committee Member of the SA Women Dentists Association, a member of the Oral Health Advisory Committee for the SA Government from 2001 to 2006 and a Curriculum Chair at a number of Australian universities. She was closely involved in the work of the Australian dental Council, occupying the role of both Deputy President and President, Treasurer and as a Director from 2002 to 2012.

Emeritus Professor Wayne John SAMPSON, Eden Hills SA 5050

For significant service to dental education in the field of orthodontics.

Currently serving as the Emeritus Professor of Orthodontics, Adelaide Dental School, Emeritus Professor Wayne Sampson was appointed to the P. Raymond Begg Chair in Orthodontics (1995-2014), was a Founding Trustee, Endowment for the Begg Chair in Orthodontics and was the Founding Donor for the Milton Sims Professor Project. A lecturer in Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry from 1976 to 1985 and a senior lecturer from 1985 to 1995, EmerProf. Sampson was the former Senior Visiting Dental Specialist and Senior Consultant at the Royal Adelaide Dental Hospital throughout the 1980s as well as playing an active role in the South Australian Branch of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, including as President.
