Additional charges laid after child abuse investigation at Wollongong

Detectives investigating alleged child abuse in the Illawarra region will lay more than 30 additional charges against a man at court today.

On Wednesday 11 December 2019, detectives from Wollongong Police District executed a search warrant at a home at Woonona as part of an investigation into alleged child abuse offences.

During the search, officers seized various electronic devices for forensic examination, before arresting and charging a 31-year-old Thirroul man.

Earlier this month, the man was also charged with offences relating to the alleged procurement of a 14-year-old girl for unlawful sexual activity.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives will today (Wednesday 25 March 2020) lay an additional 36 charges on the man relating to procuring children for unlawful sexual activity, have sexual intercourse with person older than 14 and less than 16, and possess child abuse material.

He is remanded in custody and will now face 51 charges at Wollongong Local Court today.
