Adelaide Central Market Expansion Opening Timeline

The highly anticipated expansion of the Adelaide Central Market is set to open to the public before Easter 2027.

As construction of the expanded ground floor in the Market Square complex nears completion, shop fit-outs in the expanded market will commence in the near future.

Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said unforeseen delays beyond Council's control have pushed back the timeframe for the Adelaide Central Market expansion, which began in 2022.

"This exciting once-in-a-generation $600 million project will open in stages from early December and be fully open in time for the busy Easter trading period," said the Lord Mayor.

"The expansion will double the size of the market and introduce a vibrant mix of new food, drink and specialty retail experiences. These new offerings will build on the rich culture, flavours and community that have made the Adelaide Central Market Australia's best and most loved food market."

The Lord Mayor thanked traders, visitors and the community for their patience.

"This project represents a transformational investment in the future of our city," said the Lord Mayor.

"The development is now entering its final stages, with an additional 260 car park spaces to open before Christmas. We can't wait to welcome the community to the expanded Adelaide Central Market in the coming months. Importantly, the market remains open and thriving with another busy Christmas and New Year trading period ahead for traders, the community and visitors."

Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) Chair Theo Maras said the Adelaide Central Market team remains focused on building on everything the community already knows and loves about the market.

"We're working closely with our traders to enhance one of the world's great food and produce markets with even more reasons to visit, explore and connect," said Mr Maras. "While the opening timeline has changed due to circumstances outside our control, we're more excited than ever to open the doors in 2027 to something every South Australian can be proud of."

ICD Chief Executive Officer Matt Khoo said the Market Square project would continue to come to life over the coming months.

"The precinct is nearing completion, with more than 1000 office workers expected to be based here by the end of the year, alongside the opening of Coles, Liquorland and more retail on Level One, giving shoppers even more reasons to visit during the festive season," said Mr Khoo.

"With almost all apartments sold and new residents soon moving in, the precinct is steadily coming to life as we move towards completion in the coming months."
