The Cobden Aerodrome committee is calling for nominees to help pilot the Council-owned community asset to new heights.
Two three-year community representatives positions have become vacant by rotation.
New members will be elected at its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 7 October.
Recent accomplishments of the committee include:
- Employment of a part time grounds keeper
- New fencing at clubrooms
- Boundary fence upgrades
- Sheeting of plane parking area
- Improved mowing and site maintenance
- Upgraded signage
- Improved stormwater
Corangamite Shire Mayor Kate Makin highlighted the aerodrome's importance to the region.
"As the only Council-owned aerodrome in the Shire, it plays a crucial role in supporting our community – providing agricultural services, emergency transport, connectivity, and firefighting capabilities," Cr Makin said.
"The aerodrome has served a wide range of users over the years, including the Cobden Aero Club, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Air Ambulance Victoria HEMS helicopter, fire bombers, agricultural sprayers, tourist and business flights, power line maintenance crews, and flight training schools."
Councillor Jo Beard, Council's representative on the Committee and local Tandarook Ward councillor, encouraged aviation enthusiasts to get involved.
"If you're passionate about aviation and care about this valuable community asset, we'd love to hear from you," Cr Beard said.
"It's a manageable commitment – we meet every two months – and it's a great opportunity to contribute to the aerodrome's future."
Following extensive stakeholder engagement and benchmarking, Council adopted a Master Plan in 2022 to guide future development. The plan focuses on safety, infrastructure, and operational improvements.
Future committees will play a key role in supporting the plan's implementation, with potential projects including runway widening, lengthening and resurfacing, upgrades to the helicopter transfer pad, and the possible construction of a new passenger terminal.
Expressions of interest close at 5 pm on Tuesday 23 September.
