Wollongong City Council are continuing beachside clean-ups following the high tides and swells over the weekend.
The recent weather activity caused a significant amount of sand movement and ocean debris to be washed up on several beaches and onto public spaces. Coastal areas in the north and south of Wollongong experienced the greatest impact including Austinmer, Thirroul, and Port Kembla.
As of Monday 30 March, there are currently beach closures at Fairy Meadow, Austinmer, City Beach, Towradgi and Scarborough. The Continental Pool is also closed until Thursday 2 April.
Thirroul Beach Promenade will be closed on Tuesday 31 March and Austinmer Car Park will be closed on Thursday 2 April for clean-up efforts.
"We're currently working at impacted beach spaces, cleaning up our public amenities, relocating sand safely and investigating beach conditions, to ensure they are safe and accessible for community use," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"So, you may see extra machinery and crews oceanside, as we undertake our best effort to restore your favourite beach by the upcoming Easter long weekend.
"But as we know, weather could dampen our plans. We'll continue to keep an eye on our coast for any weather conditions that may impact our progress.
"We appreciate our community's patience as we work through our clean up efforts and ask that you take care when you are in and around our patrolled beach areas. Stay up to date on Council's social media for any long-term closures."
For safety reasons, members of the public are asked to follow signage or directions from Council staff near work zones. At no point should you enter the work areas.
Please note that patrolled beach closures will continue to change through the week as we work through the clean-ups and investigations.
If you're visiting one of our open patrolled beaches, please be aware that the sand and coastal conditions will have changed since last week. Please exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings when on the sand or entering the water.
