Aggravated assault in Alice Springs 28 August

Northern Territory Police will be will be charging a 42-year-old man today with serious offences following an incident at a licensed venue in Alice Springs last night.

Around 7:40pm police received reports that a woman was being carried out of the bar by a group of patrons. Police and paramedics attended, determining the woman had been assaulted and was suffering non-life-threatening injuries. She was conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital.

The alleged offender was arrested on the scene and taken into custody.

The venue management closed the bar when police declared a crime scene and all patrons left the premises, many of whom were in various states of intoxication and remained in the area.

A number of police were required to attend the area to manage the scene and deal with the conduct of persons present.

A notice was served on the venue today suspending its liquor licence for 48 hours under provisions of the Liquor Act.

Commander Craig Laidler said, "Police have responded to multiple incidents at this location recently and took this action to maintain a level of peace and public safety."
