Aggravated assault in Southern region

A 37-year-old woman has suffered serious injuries to the back and head following a domestic violence incident in a remote community in the Barkly region earlier today.

Around 5:30am police were called to the remote community of Ampilatwatja in response to a woman presenting at the local clinic with serious injuries.

Initial reports indicate a 39-year-old man, who is known to the woman, assaulted her to the back, shoulders and neck area with a metal pole.

The man fled the area, but has since been located and arrested by police, and is expected to be charged with various offences relating to this assault, later today.

The woman was medivaced to the Alice Springs Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations into the assault continue with forensic officers and detectives from the Southern Investigations Division traveling to the remote community today.

Police urge anyone with information which may assist with investigations to contact them on 131 444 or report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers and referred PROMIS number 9401782.
