Agriculture on agenda following by-elections

NSW Farmers Vice President Xavier Martin says the focus is firmly on farming after last weekend's by-elections, with the apparent victors in Bega and Monaro both talking up support for agriculture.

On the South Coast, Labor candidate Dr Michael Holland looked set to become the next Member for Bega, while in Monaro The Nationals' Nichole Overall was ahead in the counting. Mr Martin said even though the two new members were from different sides of politics, both made a point of prioritising agriculture during online forums last week.

"We gave our members the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and there were a few key themes that emerged - property tax, pest weeds and animals, bushfire recovery and the need for better infrastructure," Mr Martin said.

"It was great to hear these candidates talk about the importance of supporting agriculture, because it is a major sector for these regional economies.

"NSW Farmers looks forward to meeting with the newly-elected MPs in the near future, and building a solid relationship ahead of next year's general election."
