Airservices releases review of culture

Airservices Australia is today releasing the report A Review of Culture at Airservices Australia by Elizabeth Broderick and Co. commissioned in August last year.

The report examines the culture of Airservices Australia specifically relating to bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, psychological welfare and inclusion. It draws on extensive qualitative and quantitative data and makes 19 detailed recommendations.

“Airservices will implement the report’s recommendations in full to ensure that we offer a safe, diverse and inclusive workplace for all of our employees”, said Chief Executive Officer Jason Harfield.

“The report contains deeply disappointing reports of bullying, harassment and workplace exclusion that are completely unacceptable to me and the senior leadership team at Airservices. This behaviour has no place in any workplace and must stop,” said Mr Harfield.

“Airservices has zero tolerance for all forms of workplace bullying and harassment. Our staff are required to strictly comply with the organisation’s Code of Conduct, which explicitly prohibits all forms of bullying and harassment. Breaches of the Code of Conduct result in disciplinary action, including dismissal. I encourage anyone who experiences conduct of this nature to report it immediately.”

The Report acknowledges that Airservices senior leadership has engaged readily with the review team to explore strategies for reform, and has already commenced a number of initiatives to progress the necessary cultural transformation.

Airservices Chairman John Weber said: “While the report reflects positively on Airservices’ commitment to a strong safety culture and the commitment of our people to the very important work they undertake on a daily basis, it also identifies cultural issues that require urgent attention.

“The Board is committed to leading cultural change at Airservices. By implementing the report’s recommendations Airservices will build a stronger, respectful and more diverse organisation, better able to take on the challenges ahead of us.

“I would like to thank Elizabeth and her team for their exceptional work.”

Elizabeth Broderick said: “The findings provide an opportunity for Airservices to improve its culture to create an organisation where all employees can thrive and progress.

“Whilst a number of the quotes and survey data are of concern, the recommendations provide a solid platform for leaders and employees to strengthen organisational culture and capability.”
