The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is enhancing the mental health services provided to Australia's high performance athletes and their families to help manage the impact on their wellbeing as a result of the country's devastating bushfires.
The AIS Wellbeing and Engagement team has announced its Mental Health Referral Network will be extended to direct family members of athletes affected by bushfires.
Launched in 2019, the AIS Mental Health Referral Network (MHRN) provides services to high performance athletes, coaches and eligible individuals within the sports system who have mental health or wellbeing concerns.
"The damage from Australia's bushfires has touched everyone in some way, and many athletes, along with their families and friends have been directly impacted," said AIS CEO Peter Conde.
"The leadership role in high performance sport played by the AIS in athlete wellbeing is crucial at stressful times such as these, with experienced and qualified psychologists available through the MHRN to help athletes and families manage these issues now and into the future."
Olympic Gold Medallists who are part of the AIS Gold Medal Ready Program are teaming up to auction off memorabilia and collectables in an effort to support the victims of the fires and Conde acknowledged the financial and morale-boosting efforts the Australian sporting community has already extended.
"Across the sporting landscape, we've seen incredible support for those who are suffering from the fires, with Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games athletes all pitching in to help out," said Conde.
With the impact of fires and associated smoke haze, the AIS has also released best practice guidelines on smoke pollution and exercise for high performance athletes.
