Al Gore headlines Climate Smart Engineering conference

Engineers Australia

Former US Vice President and global environmentalist Al Gore will headline the speakers at Engineers Australia's Climate Smart Engineering 2021 conference.

Mr Gore joins an already-stellar line-up of speakers, which also includes Paul Polman, former Chief Executive Officer of Unilever and member of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General's High-Level Panel which developed sustainable development goals.

Engineers Australia Chief Executive Officer Dr Bronwyn Evans said: "As a recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize for his work raising awareness about the issue of climate change, Mr Gore will provide delegates with compelling insights into how Australia can tackle this issue as we work through and come out the other side of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Mitigation and adaptation to climate change cannot be successful without engineers, whose work spans all industries.

"A UN Engineering for Sustainable Development report highlights the crucial role that engineering plays in achieving the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN.

"The conference is designed to connect minds and showcase engineering solutions which will assist with addressing climate change and bring together business, finance and government officials.

"It will also demonstrate that engineering in partnership and in collaboration can be responsive to and effective against a common goal or global target, as we have witnessed during the pandemic."

Mr Gore will deliver his conference speech virtually.

"Climate Smart Engineering 2021 will be about much more than quality speakers," Dr Evans said.

"Engineers Australia is creating discussion and direction papers in collaboration with non-engineering stakeholders, which will be discussed.

"A primary objective of the conference is to explore all of these initiatives with a view to achieving a more coordinated approach on policy, advocacy, networking, education and technical support for the broader community and for members of Engineers Australia."

To register to attend or participate virtually in the conference, which is taking place from 16-17 November in Sydney, please visit the conference website, www.eacse.com.au.
