All In For National Reconciliation Week

As we mark National Reconciliation Week 2026, the Reef Authority is reflecting on reaching the end of its first Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and the meaningful progress made over the past two years.

The RAP has guided a range of initiatives to strengthen relationships, build understanding and embed respectful practices across the organisation. One of the most recent outcomes has been the strong uptake of cultural awareness training, with more than 150 staff participating in in-person sessions across Townsville and Cairns.

Delivered in partnership with a Reef Traditional Owner, the training offered staff the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and enduring connections to Sea Country. Participants explored the importance of cultural protocols, gained insight into the diversity of First Nations communities, and developed a greater awareness of how language, history and lived experience shape perspectives today.

Importantly, the sessions created space for open conversation and reflection, encouraging staff to consider how cultural awareness can be applied in their day-to-day work. From engaging respectfully with Traditional Owners to further recognising the value of Indigenous knowledge systems in Reef management, the training has helped build both confidence and capability across the agency.

The level of engagement highlights a genuine commitment to moving beyond intent and into action. It reflects a growing understanding that effective Reef management is strengthened through respectful partnerships and by valuing the knowledge that has cared for the Great Barrier Reef for tens of thousands of years.

While the formal life of this Innovate RAP is coming to a close, the work of reconciliation continues. The foundations built over the past two years - including initiatives such as in-person cultural awareness training - will continue to shape how we work, collaborate and make decisions into the future.

National Reconciliation Week provides an important moment to reflect on progress, while recognising the shared responsibility to continue listening, learning and contributing to reconciliation.
